22nd Birthday Concert
What a fantastic evening the Birthday Concert was! We had the biggest audience ever, played a huge variety of music and everyone had a great time, so much so that we got a standing ovation at the end.
And we raised over £400 for a very special charity. The trust was set up in memory of 6 year old Luke, grandson of oboist Chas Cory, who sadly lost his battle with myeloid leukemia in December last year. The purpose of the trust is to raise enough money to buy and run a caravan in Selsey which will be used as a place for children affected by the illness to enjoy seaside holidays together with their families. We are immensly pleased to have been able to help this very worthy cause.
This year, we were especially lucky to have Take 5 perform as people arrived. This local group features 3 of our members and really set the scene for the evening. We also gave 2 awards to members of the band - Chas Cory was awarded the Clifton Prize for his contribution to the band and Ophelie Humphrey was given the Squires Cup.
As well as being a fun evening on the day, we've also recorded the event with pictures, video, and a professional sound recording, courtesy of sound engineer, Dave Poste. So we'll be adding these to this page shortly but below is this year's programme so you can see what you missed.
- The Red Shield - a popular concert march of the Salvation Army
- Oliver - we had the audience singing along to this great arrangement by our horn player Ian Rainger
- Romance (from the Gadfly) - another arrangement by Ian, this time featuring Laura King playing the solo clarinet part of this beautiful work by Shostakovic
- Solo: Hannah Barnes played two unaccompanied solos for clarinet including Bach's famous Toccata in D Minor
- New Baroque Suite - a stunning musical fusion in 3 movements by Ted Huggens
- The Watermill - this amazing oboe solo was expertly performed by Chas Cory a dedicated to his grandson, Luke
- Salute to Bob Hope - a real foot tapper with lots of popular tunes that got the audience singing along
- Immerwieder Blasmusik - After the interval, we got things going with this fun German March - a gift from our friends in Wurmersheim
- Duet: Alex Barnes and Tim Pickering performed a couple of great, jazzy duets
- Blues in the Night - As is tradition, we performed Blues in the Night in memory of trumpetter Dave Clifton with Nicky Morris taking the solo.
- Solo: John Haselip - It was John Haselip's 82nd Birthday so to celebrate, he performed his signature piece, Stranger on the Shore
- Waltz no 2 - more Shostakovic, this time from the Suite for Variety Orchestra (what was previously thought to be the 2nd Jazz Suite)
- Carnival of Venice - a stunning solo work, performed excellently on the flute by Claire Jardine
- Aladdin - Alan Menkin's fantastic score for the Disney film
- Sussex By The Sea - As always, we ended with our local. But the audience wanted more so we then played...
- Chicago - a fun arrangement of the popular musical was a great finish to the evening.
